Brent Frederick is the associate editor of Canadian Sailings, Canada's weekly transportation and trade logistics magazine. He is responsible for the co-ordination of all editorial content in the publication.

Prior to joining Canadian Sailings in October 2001, he worked 14 years in the communications department of the Port of Montreal, and four years for a Montreal-area weekly newspaper where he was a reporter, sports editor and assistant editor.

Brent has a bachelor of arts in communications and journalism from Concordia University in Montreal.

Aron Gampel

Aron Gampel is Vice-President & Deputy Chief Economist with Scotia Economics in Toronto, which provides economic research to the worldwide operations of the Scotiabank Group of Companies.

Aron is a senior advisor to Scotiabank's executive management and provides regular briefings to the organization's diverse client base. Besides being an important contributor to many of Scotia Economics' publications that take the pulse of the global economy, he has broad responsibility for co-managing the day-to-day operations of the research unit. Aron is also a Director of the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and has been an ad hoc advisor to a number of industry trade groups in Canada and the United States.

With a professional career that has spanned at least seven boom-bust periods, Aron's views on the rapidly changing and challenging global economic landscape are shaped by his considerable experience and interaction with business people, policymakers, and investors alike.

Prior to joining Scotiabank in 1984, Aron spent six years as an economist with the investment firm of Pitfield Mackay Ross Ltd., and four years on the research staff of the Ontario Economic Council analyzing the economic impact of federal and provincial government programme initiatives, both in Toronto.

Aron is a graduate of York University in Toronto, Ontario, where he received his Master of Arts degree in Economics. He also earned his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and computer science from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Robert Hornung
President
Canadian Wind Energy Association


Robert Hornung has been President of the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) since August 2003 and represents the interests of more than 460 members including wind turbine manufacturers, component suppliers, wind energy project developers, owners and operators and a broad range of service providers to the wind energy industry. Robert is also a Board Member of the Global Wind Energy Council.

Prior to joining CanWEA, Mr. Hornung worked for nine years with the Pembina Institute, an environmental research and advocacy organization specializing in energy and environment issues. While at the Institute, he served as Policy and Communications Director and Climate Change Program Director. Mr. Hornung has also worked on the climate change issue with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Environment Canada, and Friends of the Earth Canada.

Mr. Hornung has an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. in Political Studies from Trent University, as well as an International Baccalaureate from the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific. He was named an Honorable Member of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in 2009.

 
Peter Kakela, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resources Studies (formerly Resource Development)

Dr. Kakela has been doing research on the iron ore industry since 1974. He has analyzed the technologic conversion to taconite pellets, the cost of shipping ore on the Great Lakes and oceans, the location advantage of different mines, the vulnerability and closure of mines, and the role government policies play on iron ore production. Since 1982 he has focused on economic issues of this basic natural resource industry, especially the production costs at each North American iron mine. Recently he has been analyzing the impacts of rising world iron ore prices and the pricing process.

Dr. Kakela is recognized internationally as an expert on the iron ore industry. He has published widely on it, including articles in Science, Land Economics, The Journal of Metals, The Professional Geographer, Engineering & Mining Journal, Skillings Mining Review, Michigan History Magazine, Great Lakes Seaway Review and numerous major reports through World Steel Dynamics, one of the world's leading steel research organizations and publishers. He has served as an expert witness on several legal cases.

In total, Dr. Kakela has published over 150 professional publications on a variety of energy, mining and other natural resources topics including more than 100 on iron ore. He was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1976-77, and later a three-year, one-quarter time Kellogg National Fellowship for leadership development from 1981 to 1984. In 1998, he was awarded a six-month research fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to analyze productivity changes in the North American iron ore industry. Dr. Kakela was awarded the MSU President's Outstanding Community Service Award in 2002 for his work leading to strengthen Michigan's automobile seat belt law after his son was killed in an accident. Dr. Kakela was also inducted into his High School's Hall of Fame at Libbey High School in Toledo, Ohio, in 2002. In 2006, Dr. Kakela accepted an invitation to be a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Great Lakes/Seaway Review magazine. He continues to be very active in his teaching and research programs. Students have rated him as one of the top 40 teachers, out of over 2,000 faculty members at Michigan State University.

 
Barry Senft

Grain Farmers of Ontario

Barry Senft joined Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) as CEO in July of 2009. A native of Saskatchewan, Barry has many years' experience in the grain, livestock and agri-food sectors. Beginning on the family farm, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (now Viterra) from 1984 to 1997, serving as Second Vice-President from 1993 to 1997.

He has served on several Boards, including executive positions with Heartland Livestock Services and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corp. as well as XCAN Grain, Prairie Malt Limited and Cooperators Insurance.

Prior to joining GFO, Barry was Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission from 1997 to 2002 and Executive Director of the Canadian International Grains Institute from 2002 to 2009. Barry continues to be an active partner in the family farm with his brother and son where they crop 3800 acres near Lipton Saskatchewan. Barry has just recently been appointed to the Grain Financial Protection Board. Barry is married with a son and daughter.

James Clements, as AVP Strategy & Yield, has responsibilities that include yield and commercial policy, commercial performance and product management. In addition, he has responsibility for Canadian Pacific Logistics Solutions, Transload Services and Market Development.

James' previous experience includes car management, finance, logistics, various roles in grain transportation marketing in both Canada and the US, as well as Marketing & Sales responsibility for the Mines, Metals and Aggregates business at CP.

James has an MBA in International business and finance from McGill University and a B.Sc in Computer Science and Mathematics from McMaster University

 

Michael van Toledo,

Michael van Toledo (54) is a commercial expert with over 30 years of experience in the liner shipping industry and stevedoring and has been working both in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

In his current position as senior commercial manager with the Port of Amsterdam Michael is responsible to reposition Amsterdam as a container port.

He has a true drive towards innovative partnerships and establishing sustainable relations to provide added value for his customers.

 
Florian Vreeburg

Mr. Vreeburg is currently Commercial Manager at Europe Container Terminals (ECT), part of Hutchison Port Holding (HPH): He is responsible for Deep-Sea carrier Hamburg Süd which has 40 liner services, spanning the world, connecting the continents and deploying more than 100 container ships and has around 400,000 containers. He is also responsible for Feeder/Short Sea carriers at ECT, which offer Northern Europe's largest feeder network for container transportation in Europe, Scan Baltic and Russia.

Mr. Vreeburg is currently a board member on the Foundation Shortsea Promotion Centre Holland. Mr. Vreeburg speaks Dutch, English and German and his personal values include teamwork, humour, being results oriented and the environment.

 

Marc-André Roy

Marc-André Roy is CPCS’s Vice President, responsible for North America and also a Principal with the company. He has extensive experience directing and managing large multi-disciplinary teams on transportation strategy and investment assignments.

Marc-André has led projects for all levels of government, the private sector, and international financial institutions, including the World Bank. He has worked internationally in Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa in various capacities.

Marc-André is a graduate of the International MBA program (top graduate of both IMBA and MBA, 2004), Schulich School of Business, York University.

Mr. Walker has over 30 years of experience in transportation and logistics within Canadian Pacific and is currently Director – CPLS (Project Cargo).

Mr. Walker has worked in field operations and marketing & sales in various middle management roles on both sides of the border, with a key focus in customer relationship management, growth sales, agricultural business, luxury passenger train service, and logistics solutions in emerging markets.

Today, he leads the Dimensional and Industrial Products team within the Canadian Pacific Logistics Solutions group, a business entity within Canadian Pacific based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Mike Fletcher
International Diver and Film maker

Mike Fletcher is an internationally renown diver and film maker. Over the last dozen years he has been a host character in more than 100 episodes of underwater, documentary television. Seen in over 170 countries in 16 different languages, most of his work has been featured on History Television in Canada and National Geographic Networks around the world.

Working primarily as an Expedition Leader, Underwater Cameraman, Writer and Director, Mike has co-ordinated nearly 50 international, underwater searches that have led to the discovery of many lost submarines, shipwrecks, and famous airplanes. Beginning his professional diving career in Ontario, Mike Fletcher was born on, and is a graduate of.... Hwy H2O.

Al Vanagas

Al Vanagas is Senior Vice-President, Technical of Algoma Central Corporation. Prior to his appointment in May 2008 he held a number of management positions with Algoma over the past 32 years and steadily progressed from a junior engineer on a ship of the fleet to his current position. Al is a graduate of Georgian College in Marine Engineering. He holds a First Class Marine Engineer's Certificate is a Certified Engineering Technologist – Ontario (OACETT) and a Member of the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering (CIMarE).

As Senior Vice President, Technical, Al oversees all of Algoma's technical interests in vessels. These interests include Algoma's domestic dry bulk fleet, its domestic tanker fleet, owned and operated by Algoma Tankers Limited, its ocean dry bulk fleet owned by Algoma Shipping Inc., and Marbulk Canada Inc., and its international flag product tanker interests under Algoma Tankers International Inc.

Al was responsible for the recovery plan after the loss of the Algoport in 2009 which involved fast tracking an aft end design for a fore body which was already constructed. The result is the Algoma Mariner, the first new Great Lakes self Unloader in almost thirty years. Al is currently heading a team of designers and engineers who have produced the Equinox class of ships which have been contracted for construction in China.

 

Joseph W. Cappel
Director of Cargo Development
Port of Toledo

Joseph W. Cappel, PPM(r) is the Director of Cargo Development for the Toledo - Lucas County Port Authority. He is responsible for working with the Port of Toledo's air and seaport terminals to increase and diversify cargo development domestically and internationally. This includes leveraging the Ports expansion and modernization efforts, providing educational outreach, and facilitating communications between key terminal management and the business community.

Joe joined the Port Authority in September 2004. Prior to that, he was the Logistics Manager at Ryder for steel handling terminals in Dundee, Michigan, and Hermitage, Pennsylvania. In 2002, Mr. Cappel received the Ryder Regional Presidents Award for Outstanding Safety Leadership. Mr. Cappel also was a distribution supervisor for the Kroger Company at their facilities in Columbus, Ohio.

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Cappel is a graduate of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration majoring in transportation & logistics and marketing.

Joe is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and serves on the Toledo Metropolitan Council of Governments Freight Council and several committees along with the Editorial Advisory Board of the Great Lakes/Seaway Review magazine. Joseph is the 63rd candidate to receive the Professional Port Manager (PPM) certification through the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). He represents the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority on the American Great Lakes Ports Association (AGLP), AAPA Great Lakes Caucus, Chamber of Maritime Commerce and the Green Marine, HWY H2O, Marine Highways, Toledo Harbor Dredging Task Force, and Great Ships Initiative campaigns.

 

David Bolduc

David Bolduc completed a Bachelor of International Studies at York University in Toronto and a Master in International Relations at Laval University in Quebec City. After two years as researcher for the House of Commons in Ottawa, he joined the St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (Sodes) in 2005 as environmental and economic coordinator. While at Sodes, David Bolduc actively participated in the creation of the Green Marine program, of which he was nominated Executive Director in 2010.

Established in 2008, Green Marine aims to improve the Industry’s environmental performance beyond regulatory compliance by encouraging member participants to apply additional best practices, set reduction targets and/or introduce new technologies to improve their record in areas such as invasive species, air emissions, greenhouse gases, cargo residues, and oily waters among others.

Initially founded by Canadian and U.S. companies in the Great Lakes region, Green Marine has been rapidly expanding into various regions of North America, including British Columbia and Atlantic Canada. More than 50 ship owners, port authorities and terminal operators are currently part of the program.

 

Donna Taylor

Oshawa Port Authority


Ms. Taylor was born in Toronto and prior to joining the Harbour Commission in l977 was involved in the insurance and investment fields in Toronto and Oshawa.

As a member of the Oshawa Harbour Task Force which produced the first long range development plan for the port in l984 and the Second Marsh Management Committee for the Port, she has been instrumental in solving the environmental concerns that plagued the port for many years, and setting a course for the future.

Ms. Taylor was appointed Chief Executive Officer in l984, becoming the first female port manager in North America and is currently the longest serving CEO of a port in Canada.

Reporting directly to the Board of Harbour Commissioners Ms. Taylor is responsible for the operation and administration of port activities including, for example, industrial land and cargo development, facility maintenance, vessel movements and financial accountability. She deals directly with port users, government representatives from all levels, pilots, tug operators, the stevedores and longshoremen, freight forwarders and agents.

As a past President of both the International Association of Great Lakes Ports and the Canadian Association of Port Authorities and a member of Hwy H20, Ms. Taylor has been extensively involved in issues concerning the Great Lakes and has travelled throughout the world promoting the Seaway System and Great Lakes ports with her Trade Mission colleagues.

In July, 2010 the Oshawa Harbour was awarded $10 Million from the Federal Government to construct a new wharf and short sea shipping berth. In addition, a long awaited rail spur to the wharf will be constructed in 2011. Ms. Taylor's emphasis for the next three years will be on expanding and modernizing the Port of Oshawa and increasing and attracting cargo.

 

Thomas J. Brodeur
Vice-President, Marketing & Customer Service

Thomas J. Brodeur has served in a number of functions since joining Canada Steamship Lines in 1985. He was appointed to the position of Vice-President, Marketing in 1994 and his current responsibilities include all marketing and customer service related matters for CSL, including the management of sales offices located in Winnipeg, Halifax and Burlington.

Mr. Brodeur has sailed as a deck officer on the Great Lakes, holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (1976) and is a graduate of Concordia University's Executive M.B.A. program (1990).

Mr. Brodeur is also a past President of the Mariners' House of Montreal and of the Grunt Club.

 

Robert H. Ballantyne, P. Eng (Moderator)

Bob has a B.A.Sc. (Bachelor of Applied Science) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto. During his 40-year career with Canadian Pacific Limited, Bob worked in the engineering, signal, operating and marketing departments of Canadian Pacific Railway.

In 1976, he moved to Canadian Pacific Consulting Services as Vice-President, where he had responsibility for marketing and supervision of railway and other transportation projects in various parts of the world.

In 1988, Bob was assigned by Canadian Pacific to The Railway Association of Canada as President, where he served until his retirement from the CPR in 2000.

Bob is Vice-President of, and a partner in, HPB Association Management Services Inc. In 2003, the Canadian Industrial Transportation Association (CITA) contracted with HPB to manage CITA and appointed Bob as President of the Association.

Bob is also chairman of the Coalition of Rail Shippers, a group of eighteen industry associations whose member companies are large users of rail transportation. In late May, 2011, Bob was elected as the first chairman of the newly incorporated Global Shippers' Forum.

Bob is located in Ottawa.

James (Jim) D. Frost
Marine Transportation Specialist
MariNova Consulting Ltd.

James (Jim) Frost is a marketing and business development specialist, experienced in port marketing, short sea shipping and the ferry industry. He managed a container feeder/transhipment service operating between the traditional trading links of Halifax and Boston, which was the result of a marketing and feasibility study that he co-authored. He was also marketing manager for Marine Atlantic, a large crown corporation which operates ferry services in Atlantic Canada.

For most of the period from 1995-2011, Jim has owned and operated MariNova Consulting Ltd., which specializes in multi-modal transportation studies. He was lead consultant for the Ontario Marine Study and the Eastern Canada Hub & Spoke Study. He is presently engaged in projects for the Nova Scotia Gateway Secretariat and a large Canadian energy company.

Jim has a B.A. from McGill, an M.A. from Queen's and an M.B.A. from Saint Mary's University.

 

Daniel Reiss
Manager Business Development - Maritime Trade + Transport

Mr. Reiss has devoted his entire professional career to the improvement of transportation systems through the introduction of advanced technologies coupled with innovative business methods. He has operated companies in North America, Europe and Asia where he successfully coupled his US Based enterprises with larger local partners.

Early in his career he represented air carriers, ship owners and charterers. He negotiated an amendment to the US USSR Bi-Lateral Air Services Agreement that allowed his client to operate charter flights into the then Soviet Union. Eventually a Joint Venture was formed between Overseas National Airways, Intourist and Aeroflot to operate those charters. That Agreement is the basis for the current law on Foreign Joint Ventures in Russia. Later he started up Mina Quaboos, the principal port in the Sultanate of Oman; and while in that positions formed Sea-On-Air with Sea Land, ONA and his company, Marine International Joint Venture.

In the next phase of his career Marine International joined with a consortium of European equipment manufacturers to provide systems for handling break bulk cargo. That new company, Continental Marine Terminals, eventually formed a partnership with Bechtel to deliver turnkey integrated semi-automated break bulk terminals. Three facilities were built by CMT Systems and an additional 27 facilities world-wide employ the material handling equipment supplied through CMT and its partners.

After a buy-out by Bechtel, Mr. Reiss formed Automated Terminal Systems to design and develop automated container handling systems for Marine Terminals and Heavy Industry, principally steel mills. More recently he has joined NTELX to bring his expertise in Marine Terminal development and operations to the arena of optimizing the movement of cargoes from origins to destinations. Applying NTLEX's suite of powerful predictive analytics and forensics to resolve the issues of truck congestion at Marine Terminal gates and beyond. Mr. Reiss has been engaged as a consultant on Marine Terminal Operations, by UNCTAD on port development and in the dim past on Sea Way Marketing. Mr. Reiss is the former President of the Propeller Club of Washington DC, was head of the DC Bar and Federal Bar Sections on Private International Law. He is currently an Associate Member of the IEEE and the Institute of Iron and Steel Engineers.

 
Peter Beth

Peter Beth is Director of Operations at Schneider Logistics, Inc., wholly-owned subsidiary of Schneider National and a premier provider of logistics solutions that deliver measurable value to the most complex supply chains. In his current role he leads a team who is accountable for the management of over 200,000 port dray moves a year.

With over 20 years of transportation and logistics industry experience across multiple modes and verticals, Peter has experience in implementing and managing solutions across North America. At Schneider National and Schneider Logistics, Peter has held several leadership roles in Operations, Customer Service, Sales Support and Business Transformation.

 
Bob Baker

Mr. Bob Baker is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SynchroNet Logistics, Inc., a privately held company based in Pleasanton, CA, which provides international and US domestic asset management services and software applications to companies in the maritime container shipping industry.

SynchroNet Logistics is the parent company of SynchroNet Marine, Inc. with operational headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and SynchroNet Intermodal Services, Inc., with operational headquarters in Virginia Beach, VA. Bob joined SynchroNet Marine in 2000 And in 2007, Bob was named President and CEO of SynchroNet Marine Inc. In January of 2009, Bob was named CEO of the holding company, SynchroNet Logistics. In October 2009, he also assumed the additional role as President and CEO of SynchroNet Intermodal Services, Inc.. The executive management of all of the Company's subsidiaries and joint ventures report to Bob.

Prior to joining SynchroNet, Bob served eleven years with Sea-Land Services where he held key sales management positions throughout the Eastern, Southern and Midwestern US regions. At Sea-Land, Bob launched innovative service packages and grew revenues significantly in industries ranging from automotive to chemicals to emerging market non-military government contracts. Additionally, he held various sales positions at Crowley Maritime Corporation and started his distinguished career in the transportation shipping industry at United States (US) Lines.

Bob graduated from Hofstra University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in business management. Bob also studied Mechanical Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology for two years prior to transferring to Hofstra University. He is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and was an active member of the Xi Psi chapter from the time of his transfer to Hofstra until his graduation.

Bob is a frequent speaker at logistics, technology and transportation industry events world-wide.

Brent is a former employee of the Hamilton Port Authority and brings his experience in marine transportation and marketing to a range of business sectors.

In addition to client work, he is a contributor to Seaway Review Magazine and lends his time in volunteer roles with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton Safe Communities, Supply Chain Canada South Western Ontario Chapter and the Hamilton Small Business Enterprise Centre.
